June 2nd - 70th ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF ITALY

Each year on the 2nd of June Italy celebrates the Day of the Republic, to commemorate the institutional referendum held in 1946. In this occasion, for the first time by universal suffrage, Italian people were asked to decide for the form of government, republic or monarchy, following the fall of Fascism and the end of World War II.

Since 1948, every year the celebration has a tradition of symbolic events, incluiding the laying of a wreath at the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria and a military parade in the centre of Rome, presided over by the President of the Italian Republic in his role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

It is as well commemoried by all Italian embassies, holding special celebrations and inviting the Heads of State of the host countries.

As stressed last year by the italian President Mattarella, this day is an occasion to remind all the italians around the world that ‘Italy is a great country, with positive and dinamic energies’ and that ‘it is necessary more cohesion and solidity’.

In particular this year will be the 70th anniversary and many events and concerts like the incredible performance of the “Frecce Tricolori”, organized every year by the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Aeronautica Militare, are scheduled in order to renovate the Italian pride for a Republic that was born thanks that day.

Regarding the celebration, the Italian Ambassador to China, Ettore Francesco Sequi, had an exclusive interview with China Daily. He shared his personal experiences with Italian National Day and how China - Italy relations have progressed during the past years.
