Gi Group - Current trends in the job market and most in-demand professionals in China

07 December 2020

Dear Members and Friends,

The China-Italy Chamber of Commerce is glad to share an article published by its Member Gi Group:

The labor market, following the global economic and social situation, evolves day by day and 2020 was indeed a year of big challenges. In the coming years, we can expect new jobs to emerge, some current jobs to require new knowledge and skills, and some positions to become completely obsolete. If you are planning or extending your career path, want to cultivate sustainable skills that employers need under such circumstances, and choose the right next step, it is important to know the current trends in the job market.

First of all is important to know that, even in the midst of a global pandemic, companies are hiring, and since in-demand jobs can be found in a wide variety of industries, from hospitality and health care to technology and the skilled trades, the market has plenty of career options to consider.

One of the major fields to pay attention to, now, is the digitalization sector.

With the transition of many office-based companies to online systems and remote working, online meeting and webinar hosting platforms become essential, together with e-learning industry and e-commerce platforms. This transformation led to the increase of request of IT personnel from many companies. Software developers and software engineering personnel are in strong demand too, with the main responsibilities to research, design, implement and manage software programs. Like software developer, the Web developer is important too, to keep the online presence of companies effective, designing, writing or editing website content, identifying any website issues with testing and customer feedback.

The Operations research analyst, even more than before, advises managers and other leaders about the proper course of action when making decisions using high-level analytical methods and advanced mathematics. This figure collects and analyzes data from operational systems, gathers specialized knowledge from workers about operations to assist with solving problems and uses statistical simulations to analyze and define operational issues.

Jobs in marketing, as experts of advertising and promotions, and marketing managers, are rebounding after a moment of uncertainty. Jobs within the supply chain, instead, like drivers and logisticians, keep the high trend they had for the whole year due to the strong impulse the lockdown gave to this sector.

While bringing the health emergency under control and introducing economic rescue measures, governments are also working at policies and initiatives to support the green economy. That brings to a strong development of the Renewable Energy Sector and an intense demand of professionals and experts in the field.

Due to the quick changes of the market and its regulation, a career advisor can be a very useful resource. He provides career advice based on current market needs to individuals and on recruitment & hiring plans to employers.

It’s clear that, together with the labor market, the corporate world has to be re-configured to stay in sync with the resetting of the world. Organizations and companies want to invest now in a full redefinition and reset for a new mindset. They want to be more digital, data driven, to have more variable cost structures, agile operations and automation; to create stronger capabilities in e-commerce and security. They are ready to shift from top-down decision-making, empowering teams guided by purpose and set up a dynamic self-management and continual adaptation, nurture and foster shared resilience creating occasions of accelerated learning.

A good human resources management will be the key to this evolution; agility, resiliency and growth will be the core to the future.
