Italy Meets China: Sichuan Focus - Online, Dec 6

The China-Italy Chamber of Commerce (CICC) is pleased to invite you to join the webinar "Italy Meets China: Sichuan Tianfu Focus" on December 6th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This event is organized by the CICC and supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Chongqing and the Sino-Italian Cultural Innovation Park of Tianfu New Area (DSICI).

"Italy Meets China: Sichuan Focus" is the fourth round of a series of meetings organized to promote Italian business through practical dialogues with local partners in various key territories of China. The webinar is aimed at Italian companies interested in approaching the Chinese market or extending their operations on the territory.

Located in Southwest China, Sichuan province covers an area of 486,000 square kilometers, ranking fifth in the country. In 2021, the number of permanent residents of Sichuan province amounted to around 83.72 million, 5th in all China and equivalent to 140% of the Italian population. Historically known as the "Province of Abundance", Sichuan has one of the largest economies in western China. In 2021, the figure reached 5,385.08 billion yuan, making Sichuan become the first province with a GDP of more than 5 trillion yuan in western China and the sixth in the country. It is also worth mentioning that Sichuan came first in attracting FDI among all western provinces, by the end of 2021, 364 of the world’s largest 500 overseas companies have invested in Sichuan, especially in Chengdu.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, with a population of over 20 million at the end of 2021, achieved a GDP of nearly RMB 2 trillion (US$ 290 billion) in 2021, and an average growth rate of 6.7 percent in two years, making it the seventh wealthiest city in China. As one of the five China-Europe Railway Express Hubs, it’s designated as the national science center and pilot free trade zone with its well-developed industries in electronic information, manufacturing, food and beverage, biomedicine and cultural innovation. Also, with the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing Cluster, the city is well positioned to become a gateway between the economic centers along the coastal area and other inland Chinese cities, as well as other countries.

The Chengdu local government's FDI strategy has been centered on portraying the city as a gateway for investors to western China. In 2021, Chengdu introduced a total investment of US$ 2.177 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), a year-on-year increase of 97.5%, nearly double the previous year. Sichuan Tianfu New Area, where the greatest opportunities for foreign investment occur, mainly focuses on the development of cultural innovation industry, high-end manufacturing and advanced technology.

In August 2017, the Chengdu Municipal Government and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development signed the "Agreement of Intent for the Construction of Sino-Italian Cultural Innovation Park in Sichuan". The formal establishment of the park in the Tianfu Digital Cultural Creative City provides a platform for win-win cooperation in cultural and art exchanges and the development of cultural and creative industries between the two countries.

During this webinar, we will provide a platform for companies to have open dialogues on local opportunities, beneficial policies, and practical business experiences of Italian enterprises in Sichuan.
