Job description: 

The Centre is now looking for a short-term “Business Development Advisor” for its office in Beijing that is till July 6 2019.

The Business Development Advisor will be middle management level professional, reporting directly to the Centre Director, in charge of providing relevant, timely and effective advice to European Union SMEs on identifying and seizing business opportunities (export and investment) in China.

Typically this professional would have prior background as international sales manager, as a management consultant or in international business development.

More specifically the Business Development Advisor will:

  • Help EU SMEs identify the opportunities of doing business in China for a wide range of sectors and be able to give advice to them on how to access these opportunities while mitigating risks.
  • Carry out and coordinate research with internal and external experts in order to create sector reports and business guidelines. At the same time to supervise the quality of business research that is carried out by the Centre.   
  • Carry out trainings and deliver presentations to EU SMEs and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders such as industry associations, chambers of commerce and related Chinese organisations in order to strengthen the EU SME Centre’s knowledge network and to leverage synergies.  
  • Act as an ambassador of the EU SME Centre, by representing the Centre at business and outreach events, writing media articles, and taking part in the Centre’s social media platforms.
  • Support the sales and promotion effort of the EU SME Centre. 
Education Background: 

Qualifications and skills

Knowledge

  • High level of commercial awareness and entrepreneurial sense with special understanding for export and investment opportunities for SMEs and ability to apply business skills and knowledge to SME development and growth.
  • Solid understanding of the Chinese business environment in particular for SMEs.
  • Strong market research skills, with the ability to gain insights into various sectors and business issues, to support the development of content (e.g. reports, guidelines, case studies) for the EU SME Centre’s knowledge Centre. 
  • Academic background in business-related subjects e.g. MBA, international trade, marketing, finance

Communication

  • Consultancy skills to share knowledge and provide guidance successfully across several sectors and horizontal areas (e.g. legal, regulatory, financial etc.) relevant to SMEs, ability to provide relevant and timely advice and support to SMEs.
  • Able to train and to present to EU SMEs and other related organisations.
  • Chinese language skill is a strong asset.

Relationship management

  • Ability to provide exceptional standards of customer relationship management and service levels to SMEs.
  • Ability to manage relations with a wide variety of beneficiaries and stakeholders and in particular to work effectively with representatives of SMEs, Chambers of Commerce, external consultants, business associations, the private sector (investors, banks, etc.) and government officials alike.
  • Access to European Union SMEs and excellent networking skills to ensure that European Union SMEs are aware of business opportunities and that support services can be made available to as many SMEs as possible.

Project management

  • Project management skills to be able to manage tasks effectively delivering results under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team of international and national experts and to manage international and national short-term consultants in a result-oriented way.

Professional experience

  • Minimum 5 years of general relevant professional experience demonstrating the skills described above.
  • Middle management experience in charge of people and resources a distinct asset.
  • Substantial experience in developing business for and/or providing advice to SMEs wishing to enter third country markets; or already established there and wanting to grow in these markets (with a strong focus on Asia preferably including China).
  • Project management experience, preferably with EU financed external technical assistance programmes, ideally via a service contract, an asset.
  • Experience in working in China is a strong asset. 
  • Experience in working with Chinese authorities and in the Chinese business regulatory environment, preferably in relations to SMEs is a strong asset.
  • Prior experience in liaising with relevant counterparts of Member States public and private business support service providers an asset.

The EU SME Centre assists SMEs to establish, develop and maintain commercial activities in the Chinese market – through export and/or investment – by providing support through inter alia the provision of information, advice, training and networking events and acting as a platform facilitating coordination amongst Member State services and private sector service providers to European SMEs, particularly at the crucial early stages of their market penetration strategy.

The EU SME Centre is operated by a consortium of European Chambers of Commerce, led by the China-Britain Business Council and includes the Benelux, French, Italian and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and Eurochambres.
